I came across an article on Clemson Councilwoman Margaret Thompson today and agree with her plans for the future of the Clemson and Pickens county area. She is actively perusing ways to better the community, by action not hot air. "The county has stepped up on immigration while others have kept their heads on the sand," Thompson said. She plans to run for Pickens County Council in 2 years and wants to focus on that. As a Former Pickens County Sheriff's deputy, Thompson said she wants to get involved in the county government. "I worked for the county for
25 years and I've always had a sense of loyalty to them. The county has always treated employees well and you just can't find that anywhere else," Thompson said.Thompson also has been lobbying across the state against hiring of illegal immigrants, and when her term on the city council ends Jan. 1, she plans to tour the state talking to municipalities, counties and chambers of commerce about the issue....

Governor Mark Sanford, on June 4, 2008, signed into law the "South Carolina Illegal Immigration Reform Act".
In addition to complying with I–9 requirements, all employers must verify the legal status of employees. One way to do so is through the Department of Homeland Security's online database called E–verify ; another is to determine that the employee has a South Carolina driver's license or other government issued identity document. The statute also sets penalties, including fines and loss of business licenses, for failing to get verification and for knowingly hiring an illegal immigrant....
